On October 13, 2014, the ambassador of the State of Israel to Austria, Mr. Zvi Heifetz, visited the University of Innsbruck on invitation by Rektor Tilmann Märk and AIANI. Ambassador Heifetz was appointed in 2013 as new ambassador in Vienna and it was his first visit to Innsbruck and the university. AIANI is looking forward to a close cooperation with the embassy and ambassador Heifetz in the upcoming years. The ambassador was welcomed by a delegation from the University of Innsbruck (from left to right: Vice Rektor Roland Psenner, Dr. Sarah Matt-Leubner from transidee, Dr. Mathias Schennach from the International Relations Office, Dr. Barbara Tasser, Head of International Services, Mag. Marion Wieser, Coordinator of AIANI, Prof. Ivo Hajnal, Academic Director of AIANI and President of the University Senate, Ambassador Heifetz, Rektor Tilmann Märk and Vice Rektor Sabine Schindler). In the summer of 2014, AIANI funded for the second time the stay of two Israeli students who attended the “Innsbrucker Hochschulkurse Deutsch” (IHD; Innsbruck Higher Education Courses German). Two students were nominated by the Hebrew University in Jerusalem to spent three weeks in Innsbruck in order to improve their knowledge of the German language. The stay was organized in cooperation with the Center for Austrian Studies at the Hebrew University. AIANI is seeking for an expansion of the cooperation with the Center for Austrian Studies and the Hebrew University.
Senior Lecturer and physicist, Dr. Roee Ozeri from the Department of Physics of Complex Systems of the Weizmann Institute of Science spent a month with the Department of Quantum Optics and Spectroscopy (IQOQI) of the University of Innsbruck. During his stay, Dr. Ozeri taught for the “Introductory course on quantum information”, a summer school program that took place in Innsbruck July 7-10, 2014.
He talked about and presented his work on “Quantum Error Correction”. He also gave a talk on “Weak dipolar interactions in trapped ion chains” at the IQOQI on July 24, 2014, presenting the work of the Weizmann Institute of science in his research field. During his stay in Innsbruck as AIANI-Guest Scientist, Dr. Haim Yacobi from the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design held a public guest lecture with the title: “Israel/Africa. A Genealogy of Moral geography” in the Claudiasaal in the Old Town of Innsbruck. The guest lecture was very well received.
AIANI has initiated a “Guest Scientist Program” as a central pillar to promote the scientific exchange between Innsbruck and Israel. Israeli scientists are invited to spend up to two months as guest scientists in Innsbruck in order to work together with their local colleagues on collaborative research projects. In addition, they will teach classes and give public guest lectures. Their stay is financed by external funds provided by sponsors and donors. The first call for proposals for “AIANI-Guest Scientists” at the University of Innsbruck was announced in the Fall of 2013 and three projects were chosen to be realized in the Spring Semester of 2014.
The first AIANI-Guest Scientist was Dr. Haim Yacobi from the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, who was invited by the Department of Architectural Theory and Building History of the University of Innsbruck (Prof. Bart Lootsma). Dr. Yacobi worked on a joint project entitled “Israeli Cities, Urbanism and Urbanity”. Dr. Yacobi also taught a seminar on “Israeli Cities, Urbanism and Urbanity” at the Department of Architectural Theory at the University of Innsbruck. Students studied and analyzed the social, political, and spatial characteristics of Israeli cities such as Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Ashdod and Lod. Following the visit of Prof. Mirelman from the Weizmann Institute of Science and Berta Strulovici from the Israel National Center for Personalized Medicine to the University of Innsbruck and the Austrian Drug Screening Institute (ADSI) in January 2014, the two institutions signed a “Memorandum of Understanding” on May 22, 2014 in Innsbruck to further formalize and promote the scientific cooperation. The partnership was initiated by the heads of the Center for Chemistry and Biomedicine (CCB), Prof. Günther Bonn and Prof. Lukas Huber. The goal of the new cooperation will be to exchange knowledge and to work on joint projects in the field of biochemistry and the development of new pharmaceutical treatments to fight diseases like cancer or Alzheimer. The Weizmann Institute of Science is one of the leading research and educational institutions in the fields of medicine, natural sciences and engineering worldwide. The seven international members of ADSI’s scientific board of advisors met in Innsbruck to attend the signing of the cooperation by University of Innsbruck Rektor Tilmann Märk and Prof. Mirelman. Prof. Oren Kaplan, Dean of the School of Business Administration of the College of Management Academic Studies (COMAS) in Rishon Lezion and Dr. Dafna Kariv, Chair of the Department of Strategy entrepreneurship and Director of the Center of Entrepreneurship at COMAS, visited the University of Innsbruck on May 20, 2014 to discuss with Rektor Märk, Vice Rektor Psenner and Prof. Hajnal future possibilities for student and faculty exchange (see picture). Both sides agreed to explore future cooperation.
