AIANI-TIWAG Guest Lecture "The Changing Relationships between the Business Sector and Society"5/19/2015
„AIANI-TIWAG Guest Scientist“ Prof. Benjamin Gidron hielt am 19. Mai 2015 in der Claudiana einen öffentlichen Gastvortrag mit dem Titel “The Changing Relationships between the Business Sector and Society”. Prof. Gidron ist Professor for Social Entrepreneurship am College of Management Academic Studies und Prof. Emeritus an der Ben Gurion University of the Negev und gilt als internationaler Experte zum Thema Soizalunternehmertum. In seinem Vortrag beleuchtete Prof. Gidron die sozialen Aktivitäten von Unternehmen sowie deren gesellschaftliche Verantwortlichkeit. Ausgehend von einer historischen Erklärung der Entwicklung hin zu einem Sozialunternehmertum, analysierte Prof. Gidron die gegenwärtige Beziehung zwischen Unternehmen, der öffentlichen Verwaltung und der Gesellschaft. Im Anschluss an den Vortrag gab es für das zahlreich erschienene Publikum noch die Möglichkeit der Fragestellung und Diskussion.
Im Mai 2015 kam eine weitere AIANI Gastwissenschaftlerin nach Innsbruck. Prof. Tally Katz-Gerro von der Universität Haifa lehrte und forschte auf Einladung von Prof. Frank Welz vom Institut für Soziologie für einen Monat an der Universität Innsbruck. Prof. Katz-Gerro ist eine äußerst renommierte Kultursoziologin, die ihren PhD an der University of California at Berkeley gemacht hat. An der Universität Innsbruck unterrichtete sie ein Seminar zum Thema “Überschneidende Ungleichheiten in Kultur, Ökonomie und Politik”. Prof. Katz-Gerro wird an der Universität Haifa auch Ansprechpartnerin für Studierende der Universität Innsbruck sein, die dort im kommenden Jahr studieren werden. Am 12. Mai 2015 hielt AIANI Guest Scientist Prof. Tally Katz-Gerro von der Universität Haifa einen gutbesuchten öffentlichen Gastvortrag zum Thema “Cultural policy, cultural consumption, and the welfare state”. Dabei analysierte sie verschiedene Modelle der öffentlichen Finanzierung von Kunst und Kultur in unterschiedlichen europäischen Ländern und diskutierte die Rolle des Sozialstaates bei der Realisierung eines freien Zugangs zu kulturellen und künstlerischen Aktivitäten.
"Chemistry-In-Theatre: Insufficiency, Phallacy or Both?" An Evening in Honor of Carl Djerassi5/5/2015
In 2014 the University of Innsbruck awarded chemist, writer and "mother of the pill", Carl Djerassi a honorary doctorate and invited the renowned scientist to Innsbruck for 2015 in order to organize the performance of one of his theater plays at the Tiroler Landestheater in his presence. However, Carl Djerassi who was born in 1923 as a child of Jewish parents in Vienna passed away on January 30, 2015 in San Francisco. Nevertheless, the University of Innsbruck decided to organize this evening in commemoration of Prof. Djerassi. AIANI was put in charge in organizing this event. An interesting program, that included a scientific presentation and a performance at the Tiroler Landestheater was put together. Prof. Gabriele Werner-Felmayer from the Innsbruck Medical University and Head of the Austrian unit of "Ethucation - Network of Bioethics in Education and Training" gave a lecture on the topic "Fragmentation - Scenarios of technologically controlled reproduction ". Starting from Carl Djerassi's article "Immaculate Conception" (Neue Zürcher Zeitung, No. 221, 2014) she presented different scenarios of human reproduction in the biotech era. Prof. Werner-Felmayer recalled in her speech that, Carl Djerassi has not only contributed essentially to the development of today's technologies in the field of reproduction, but that he also chose this subject repeatedly for his literary work. Following the lecture, Carl Djerassi’s play "Chemistry in theater. Insufficiency, Phallacy or Both?” was performed by Antje Weiser, Gerhard Kasal, Jan Schreiber and Timo Senff in the Kammerspiele of the Tiroler Landestheater. Dr. Carmel Shalev vom Department for Reproduction and Society am International Center for Health, Law and Ethics der Universität Haifa kam im April 2015 als “AIANI Guest Scientist” nach Innsbruck. Sie arbeitete hier gemeinsam mit Kollegen und Kolleginnen der Medizinischen Universität Innsbruck, der Universität Innsbruck sowie der UMIT Hall an einem interdisziplinären Projekt zum Thema “Towards a human rights perspective on inter-country medically assisted reproduction (IMAR)”. Dies war das erste Projekt im Rahmen des AIANI Guest Scientist Programs, welches „universitätsübergreifend“ organisiert wurde. Dabei trug die Medizinische Universität Innsbruck die Hälfte der Kosten für den Aufenthalt von Dr. Shalev. Im Zuge ihres Aufenthalts in Innsbruck hielt Dr. Carmel Shalev von der Universität Haifa am 22. April 2015 einen öffentlichen Gastvortrag in der Claudiana mit dem Titel „Sorry New World“. Der Vortrag hatte die neuesten Entwicklungen in der Reproduktionsmedizin und deren ethische Herausforderungen zum Thema.
On March 23 and 24, 2015 Prof. Agnes Heller, renowned philosopher and Chair successor to Hannah Arendt, visited the University of Innsbruck. Prof. Heller participated in a panel discussion with other distinguished guests on the topic "Politics and Truth" about the role of truth in politics. On March 24, Professor Heller received an honorary doctorate by the University of Innsbruck. The ceremony was followed by a lecture of Prof. Heller on "Hannah Arendt and the political essay" in the auditorium of the University of Innsbruck.
On the occasion of receiving the Wachter Award 2014 for exceptional scientific achievements for his work on cancer research, Prof. Alexander Levitzki from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem visited the University of Innsbruck. Prof. Levitzki has been a specialist in the field of signal transduction with a focus on cancer for over 45 years and his research enabled the development of an entirely new class of anticancer drugs. The awardee, his wife Daphne Atlas and members of Ilse & Helmut Wachter Stiftung were welcomed by Rektor Tilmann Märk and a small delegation at the University of Innsbruck, where they also discussed possible future collaborations. On November 29 the Wachter Award 2014 was presented to Prof. Levitzki in the Aula of the university, where afterwards he held a lecture on the topic “Are we winning the war on cancer?”.
The first “International Day” took place at the location of the International Services of the University of Innsbruck in the Old Town, Herzog-Friedrich-Str. 3 (“Claudiana”) on November 4, 2014. It was conceptualized as an “Open House Day,” to promote all international services by the university on both, a university as well as on a non-university level. AIANI participated in this International Day and together with the other offices produced a video, offered information and a kosher buffet. Information material about AIANI, Israel and the possibilities of collaboration, were provided, together with Israeli snacks and sweets to a very large group of interested visitors during the day. This was also the first major opportunity for AIANI to present itself and its activities to a broader Innsbruck public and to the University of Innsbruck community.
Dr. Manuela Consonni from the Department of Romance and Latin American Studies of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem was the third AIANI Guest Scientist to come to Innsbruck in October 2014. She is currently working on a research project with the title “Exophonies. Primo Levi and the Writing of Difference” in cooperation with Dr. Federico Italiano from the Department of Languages and Literature at the University of Innsbruck. This major joint research project is taking place in three different phases, whereas phase one already included a research stay of Dr. Italiano at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem in May 2014. Dr. Italiano led a two-day workshop there. The second phase was Dr. Consonni’s stay in Innsbruck, where she taught a seminar on “World Literature and Translation Questions: Shoah Literature: Memory, Gender, Hybridity”. AIANI-Guest Scientist Dr. Consonni held a public guest lecture on “Primo Levi. Language and Survival” on October 21, 2014, in the Claudiasaal in Old Town Innsbruck. The third phase will be an international conference on Primo Levi that will take place in Innsbruck in 2015. This project is organized in cooperation with the Italy-Center (Italienzentrum) at the University of Innsbruck. Prof. Benjamin Gidron from the College of Management Academic Studies (COMAS) visited the University of Innsbruck on October 16 and 17, 2014. He met with university administrators and colleagues from the Business School to discuss further academic cooperation. Prof. Gidron will come to the University of Innsbruck as “AIANI Guest Scientist” in the Spring of 2015.
